Nevada officials are not pleased with the federal regulations proposed for the legal sports gambling market. The SAFE Bet Act aims to introduce federal guidelines for advertising, individual betting activity, and the use of artificial intelligence in the industry. However, Nevada’s U.S. senators and congressperson representing the Las Vegas Strip have expressed their resistance to the Act.

U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal are the sponsors of the SAFE Bet Act. Tonko emphasized the need for Congress to intervene in the dangerous relationship between the gambling industry and sports. He believes that federal regulations are necessary to address the public health implications of widespread sports betting legalization.

On the other hand, U.S. Rep. Dina Titus, whose district includes major casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip, disagrees with the Act. She believes that it perpetuates outdated bias against the gaming industry, which provides jobs and tax revenue to communities across the country. Titus argues that pre-empting state gaming regulators by restricting advertising and betting methods is a misguided approach.

Nevada’s two Democratic senators, Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto, also oppose the implementation of federal regulations on legal sports wagering. They argue that Nevada already has strict regulations in place to protect consumers. Senator Rosen is concerned that federal legislation could harm the workforce and local economy supported by the gaming industry. Senator Cortez Masto worries that the Act could negatively impact Nevada’s legal sportsbook industry without addressing the illegal market.

Since 1949, sports gambling has been legal in Nevada casinos. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018 allowed states other than Nevada to offer single-game sports wagering. New York, where Rep. Tonko hails from, is currently the largest sports gambling market in the country.

Overall, Nevada officials believe that federal regulations like those proposed in the SAFE Bet Act could have negative consequences for the state’s well-established legal sports gambling industry. They maintain that Nevada’s existing regulations are effective in protecting consumers and supporting the local economy.
